What could cause your water heater to
stop working? There are a few common issues to consider right away. As your
water heater ages, sediment begins to build up. When this happens, as your
water is heated, calcium and magnesium collect on the sides of the tank and the
burner of the unit. If these minerals don’t end up filtered out of your water
heater they build up to create a sediment barrier that settles on the burner
and can seriously impact the performance of your water heater.
How do you know if your water heater
is having issues? Check the colour of the burner flame. It should be blue with
yellow tips. If your burner flame is more of yellow-orange colour, that means
you’ve got an incomplete burn. An incomplete burn is a sign not only that your
water heater is performing poorly but also that it is producing carbon
monoxide, a deadly issue. Make sure to take a look at your burner periodically
to ensure safe and efficient performance, especially if you’ve noticed any
issues with your hot water.
Choosing between repairing or
replacing your water heater really comes down to how old the system is and the
overall condition it is currently in. Most units last between eight and twelve
years. As they get older they lose efficiency and become more prone to fail.
Don’t wait until your unit fails and disrupts your life. In most cases your
water heater can account for as much as 25% of your total home energy use. As
it ages, this number gets higher and your unit will become more and more pricey
to run.
